Constitution Day

Constitution Day

Constitution Day is, in our opinion, one the two most important dates in the history of the United States that we should celebrate. On September 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention adopted our Constitution and sent it to the States for ratification. Therefore, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th. The United States Flag Code calls for flying the flag on this day.

It required nearly four months of discussion for the Constitutional Convention to develop the Constitution.  It then took significant debate and nearly three years for the Constitution to be ratified by all thirteen States.

Interestingly, the Constitutional Convention “exceeded” its authority because it was actually commissioned to merely amend the Articles of Confederation that had been adopted by the original thirteen colonies. However, it decided that replacement of the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution was the best course of action.

There are two good web sites for additional information on the Constitution: usconstitution.net and nara.gov/education/teaching/constitution/home.html
